Amazon returns auction in Hamilton

Every two weeks, a new Auction X auction opens with Amazon returns, customer returns and retail overstock, right here in Hamilton. Each item is sold on its own, with its own photos and an honest condition grade — and every lot starts at $2.

A quick note before you read on: if you are looking to return something to Amazon, that happens at Amazon's own return counters and drop-off locations, and we can't help with that. This page is for the other side of the story — buying Amazon returns, at auction, for whatever the bidding reaches.

How a customer return ends up in our auction

When someone returns an item to a large retailer, the item usually can't go back on the store shelf, even if it was never really used. Returns come back for all kinds of ordinary reasons: the wrong size, the wrong colour, a changed mind, a box opened and resealed. Retailers gather these items in bulk and sell them on to businesses like ours rather than restocking them one by one.

That is the stock Auction X buys. It arrives by the pallet and the truckload, and our team sorts it item by item. Each piece is photographed as it actually is, given a condition grade from our six-tier grading scale, and listed as its own lot in the current auction. Nothing is sold as a sealed mystery box, and nothing is described as new unless the grade says so.

What kinds of items appear

Because the stock comes from returns and overstock, the mix changes with every auction, and no two auctions look the same. Typical categories include small kitchen appliances and home goods, electronics and accessories, tools and hardware, toys and games, baby items, seasonal goods, clothing, and furniture or larger household pieces when they come through. Some items are effectively untouched; others are open-box, lightly used, or in need of attention — which is exactly why every lot carries a grade and real photos of the actual item, not a catalogue picture.

The honest way to shop a returns auction is to read the grade, look at the photos, and bid what the item is worth to you in that condition. Many of our regulars tell us that is the part they prefer: the condition is stated up front, and the price is set by bidding, not by a sticker.

How bidding works

Auction X runs online auctions on a two-week cycle: each auction stays open for bidding for two weeks before it closes. You register for the auction, browse the catalogue, and bid on the lots you want. Every lot starts at $2, and bidding is by proxy: you enter the most you are willing to pay, and the system bids the lowest amount needed to keep you ahead, up to that maximum. When the auction closes, winning bidders receive an invoice showing the full total — your bid plus the $1 per-lot fee, the 16% buyer's premium on that amount, and HST. We publish exactly how that total is calculated on our What You'll Actually Pay page, so there are no surprises at checkout.
